SAVE# 1669, Officer Ryan Williams – West Virginia State Police WV

On March 20, 2011, Officer Ryan Williams responded with other officers to a reported sexual assault. While beginning the investigation and entering the residence, the assailant opened fire with a rifle. Officer Craig Birkholz was killed and Officer Ryan Williams was shot twice in the chest. One of the rounds was center chest.

According to his surgeon, the round was turned and deflected and though it caused injury, Officer Williams’ PROTECH® Titan PT100 armor saved him from a fatal wound.

Officer Williams’ K9 partner, Grendel, was also hit and is recovering as well. Additionally, seven squad cars and two ambulances were hit in fire from the assailant. A six-hour standoff ensued with the assailant even- tually taking his own life.

After less than a week in the hospital, Officer Williams was released and is recovering. He is soon to return to duty. Officer Ryan Williams is SAVES # 1769.
