If you’re an American Cop, you’ve probably never touched an actual pair of rigid Hiatts. Perhaps you think it silly to put a foot-long metal cassette on your already packed duty belt, and you’d have a point. But please, consider: Leverage. Rigid Hiatts are the ultimate in felon-restraint. For those who don’t resist, these are essentially impossible to pick if put on the right way: even if two team-players are left alone buckled up in the squad for a minute, they’ll have to do a painful little dance to get out, one which should attract a telling crowd of amused bystanders. For mean people who do bad things, you have the ultimate compliance tool after the first “click”. For nice people who make stupid mistakes, you can do a comfortable front stack and buy ‘em a candy bar en route. Why aren’t these incredibly common-sense and humane officer safety devices more popular in American Policing? Lawyers.
