Increasingly, law enforcement and corrections personnel are responding to individuals in serious mental health crises. Security officers, teachers, paramedics and hospital emergency room personnel are also increasingly responding to individuals with mental illness. Situations involving individuals in serious mental health crises are potentially dangerous, difficult, volatile, and litigious.

Course Overview
This training provides proven, effective crisis intervention/de-escalation tactics and techniques to keep the responder and individual in mental health crisis safe. The training has been in existence since 1987 and has been implemented by law enforcement agencies nationally and internationally. Jails and prisons are starting to implement this training to correctional officers to respond to the growing population of prisoners with mental illness.
This is operational training designed to equip the first responder with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely, effectively and humanely respond to individuals in serious mental health crises. It is appropriate for law enforcement, corrections, security, teachers, paramedics/ EMT’s, and hospital emergency room staff.
Topics covered in the training include the following:
- An overview of schizophrenia, psychosis, bipolar disorder, depression, suicide, excited delirium, autism and posttraumatic stress disorder
- Proven, effective crisis intervention/de-escalation strategies to respond safely, effectively and appropriately to individuals in serious mental health crises
- Active listening
- Legal aspects
- Role-play scenarios
Prerequisites
The Safariland Training Group trains only law-enforcement officers, military personnel, qualified security personnel and correctional personnel.
