Safariland™ Adds Another Armor Model to its New Line of NIJ Standard-0101.06 Body Armor Products

July 21, 2009
JACKSONVILLE, Florida

Safariland, a BAE Systems line of business, announced today that it has released another armor model that satisfies the requirements of the National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) new Voluntary Body Armor Compliance Testing Program under NIJ Standard-0101.06 (NIJ-06).

Safariland’s XT-700 Type IIIA model (#BA-3A00S-FC01) has been determined by the NIJ to comply with the new NIJ-06 standard.  Its release expands Safariland’s Xtreme® Series of concealable body armor to five NIJ-06 approved models available for immediate purchase.

The NIJ introduced the Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor NIJ Standard-0101.06 to establish minimum performance requirements and test methods for the ballistic resistance of personal body armor in order to improve performance so that officers receive adequate protection against those threats likely faced over the next decade.  According to the new NIJ-06 standard, body armor must now be able to defend against increased velocities of ammunition calibers to better reflect current street threats and law enforcement duty weapons. These new performance requirements are critical components to improving the life-protecting equipment being used by law enforcement.

“We are proud to have our sixth approved model of NIJ-06-compliant body armor,” said John Geshay, Director, Armor Category Marketing. “We continue to offer the law enforcement community with concealable body armor choices that are lightweight, durable and provide enhanced protection against today’s threats.”

Safariland’s NIJ-06 body armor models set a new industry benchmark by combining the latest technologies -- Geometrics and proprietary framing -- with advanced ballistic materials.  The newest available model is:

  • XT-700 Type IIIA – Tested against the .357 Sig & .44 mag. threats, this model provides advanced ballistic protection in a lightweight, hybrid design.

The newly approved model adds to Safariland’s line of previously approved NIJ-06 body armor models:

  • XT-700 Type II – Tested against the 9mm & .357 mag. threats, this model provides advanced ballistic protection in a lightweight, hybrid design.

  • XT-300 Type IIA – Tested against the 9mm & .40 cal. threats, this model provides optimum ballistic performance in a robust design.

  • XT-300 Type II - Tested against the 9mm & .357 mag. threats, this model provides optimum ballistic performance in a robust design.

  • XT-300 Type IIIA – Tested against the .357 Sig & .44 mag. threats, this model provides optimum ballistic performance in a robust design.

As previously announced, Safariland was also the first body armor manufacturer to receive approval for a multi-threat armor model under NIJ-06.  Safariland’s Multi-Flex™ Series of concealable armor features combined ballistic and spike protection. The ballistic protection is tested under the new NIJ Standard-0101.06, while the spike protection is tested under the NIJ Standard-0115.00.  Built specifically for the law enforcement and corrections markets, the following model is available for immediate purchase:

·         MT-330 Type IIIA/Spike 3: Tested against the .357 Sig & .44 mag. threats, as well as against a spike instrument with a strike energy of 31.7 ft lbs (43 Joules), the MT-330 offers combined ballistic and spike protection.

With the introduction of these new NIJ-06 body armor models, Safariland continues its tradition of excellence in protecting law enforcement officers.  Recently restructured to incorporate all of its previously independent operating brands, the company is united under one name - Safariland.  Together, Safariland’s body armor models combine the heritage and expertise of American Body Armor®, PROTECH®, SAVVY®, Safariland Armorwear™ and Second Chance®.  In doing so, Safariland offers the most comprehensive line of body armor available in the industry.  Safariland’s NIJ-06 body armor provides law enforcement officers with enhanced performance, durability, comfort and value, which deliver on the company’s motto: Together, We Save Lives™.
